Filtration is a critical part of analytical sample prep, yet choosing the right syringe filter for your specific application can be challenging. Register to learn how to simplify the process. What we’ll cover: Why correct membrane selection is important for optimal instrument protection and the most accurate results.
It would be expected that syringe filters containing absolute rated membrane media would be approximately equivalent regardless of supplier for filters that have the same size, same membrane material and same pore size rating. This is not the case for syringe filters containing nominally rated media such as glass fiber or nonwoven polypropylene.
PTFE Syringe Filters. PTFE syringe filters are hydrophobic and chemically resistant to all solvents, acids, and bases. PTFE does not impart any extractables to the filtrate. It's an ideal material for transducer protectors because it blocks water vapor. PTFE is ideal for filtering and de-gassing chromatography solvents.

Hold the syringe vertically to wet the membrane evenly as this helps prevent air blocks and promotes a higher flow rate. Press the syringe gently through the filter and if possible, discard the first .25mL because if there is any contamination, it’d be within the first mL of the sample.

Mar 27, 2022 · Step – Now, Select a Proper Pore Size. For research and medical purposes, 0.2/0.22 μ and 0.45 μ syringe filters are the most often used pore sizes. The particle size determines the pore size you use. For example, use a syringe filter of 0.2-micron pore size to filter out particles larger than 0.2 microns in diameter.
Chart below shows the Chemical Compatibility of various types of syringe filters with some commonly used chemicals. All types of membrane filter products were exposed to specified chemicals/reagents for 3 days at 250C. Upshot: All products retain its Integrity after Chemical compatibility Test. O = Recommended X = Not Recommended.
2-in-1 filters are a two-layered filter in a single housing with a built-in glass fiber pre-filter on the top layer and a membrane filter on the bottom layer. The coarse pre-filter removes the larger particulates that would plug the membrane filter. This type of filter is recommended for difficult-to-filter samples.

Hold the syringe with the filter pointing up and “top off” by pushing a few drops through the filter. Place the filter tip over the collection container and push the sample through a syringe filter by applying gentle positive pressure. To purge the syringe filter and maximize sample throughput, remove the filter from the syringe and draw air into the syringe. Then reattach the filter and push the plunger to force some of the air through the filter.
Use these all-plastic disposable syringes with your Titan3, Target2, and Choice Basic syringe filters. Comprising a polypropylene barrel and polyethylene plunger, these syringes eliminate problems with rubber or synthetic plunger gaskets and requires no silicone or oil lubricant in the barrel. Choose from in 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 50 mL sizes.
